19^th and 20^th century trade directories were similar to phone books, often listing people by both trade and surname. Later directories often list people and their address. The directories were published and printed by a variety of companies, initially national directories would comprise a single volume, but later editions were more likely to cover a single or small cluster of counties. Piggot, Kelly, Slater & White were the most well know of the national published editions and in Rutland, Matkins covered a much more local area, There is currently a University of Leicester project to digitise English and Welsh directories dating from 1750 to 1919, select the Directories Database for information.
