What was life like in 17th century Langham? A display being staged by Langham Village History Group at Rutland County Museum from 28 January to 10 March 2012 will provide some clues. Researches into parish records, land leases, wills, inventories and other documents have provided a fascinating insight into life in Langham during the 1600s.  An amazing 600 different family names appear on documents of the period. The role of the church, the state, and the Lord of the Manor are explored, along with education, farming, transport, charities and more. The Parish Registers, which date from 1559 are being loaned by the Record Office for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland for the duration of the exhibition. Also on display will be a copy of a map of the parish prepared in 1624 by the Exton Estate, which owned much of the village at the time.
This display is part of a much larger exhibition held in Langham in 2009 following a research project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The resulting, much acclaimed book, The Life and families of 17th Century Langham will be on sale for those who wish to learn more.
There will also be a rolling digital presentation on the wider history of Langham. Click here to see the Museum opening hours
