Langham Christmas Tree and Crib Festival
Langham Church Christmas Tree Festival is held every two years. The 2012 Festival weekend proved to be a
huge success and raised about £2750. About a hundred people enjoyed the Opening Concert by professional
singer and actress Jackie Morrison from Langham and her friend Thora Ker accompanied by pianist David
Smith with an evening of seasonal songs varying between traditional, sentimental and humorous including
an energetic audience participation version of 12 Days of Christmas. The free mulled wine/soft drinks and an
impressive amount of canapés were equally enjoyed by all, surrounded by glittering trees and cribs. There
was also an impassioned presentation by Louise Maskell on our nominated charity for the year -
‘KIDS COMPANY’, which will receive a donation out of the proceeds from the festival with the rest going
towards the upkeep of the Church.
The musical theme was continued with a variety
of live musical performances throughout the
weekend in the church, including both the choirs
from Langham and Catmose Primary schools, the
Destiny Ambassadors Gospel choir, who we hope
will be featured in a future concert programme,
and a dozen musicians singing and playing piano,
organ, cello and viola at different times,
supplemented by Christmas carols on CD.
The Craft Fair on Saturday in the Village Hall also
featured a willow weaving workshop where John
Shone and Martin helped people to make their
own willow masterpieces. There was also a
tombola and refreshments throughout the day
with refreshments on Sunday being in the church.
More than 300 people (including those with ‘pass outs’ from the concert night) visited the Church on
Saturday and Sunday to view the trees and cribs and buy raffle tickets, quiz sheets and refreshments. There
were many cribs and trees decorating the church but out of the nearly 50 Christmas Trees and Cribs in the
competition, the winners were: the Langham School crib made by years 1 – 6 in the style of Amish rag dolls;
the ‘Arctic Animals’ tree by Art Imps; the ‘wholly incredible and edible crib’ by Langham & Barleythorpe WI
and the Craft Club tree ‘Winter Warmers for charity’. The organisers would like to thank everyone who has
so generously sponsored us or donated raffle and tombola prizes, the splendid refreshments and above all
those who have given their time and energy to make the festival a success. Roll on 2014 for our next
Christmas Tree festival.
